Kavros – Georgioupolis
On the border of Chania and the prefecture of Rethymno, about 40 kilometers east of the city of Chania you will find the coastal town Georgioupolis. It is one of the top tourist destinations for holidays in Crete.
4 km west of Georgioupolis is Kavros a long beach with crystal clear waters and golden sands.
Vantaris Beach is located at this beach.
Geographically, Georgioupolis belongs to the municipality of Apokoronos, an area full of picturesque villages, lush nature, lakes and rivers. The most famous lake of Crete is here, Lake Kournas.
The square of Georgioupolis is lively and vigorous throughout the day. From the morning where coffee and breakfast is served at cafes, at noon for lunch at one of the taverns and in the evening you can enjoy a drink at one of the bars that are popular with the young people in the area.
A 5 minute walk from the square you will come across the bay of Georgioupolis which ends up at Almiros River. To the right and left of the harbour are the beaches and along the beaches are many restaurants and cafes where you can treat yourself to something or enjoy your coffee overlooking the magnificent beach.
At the edge of the harbour we find the picturesque church of St. Nicholas, built on a pier that offers an ideal landscape suitable for photos.
Kavros and the surrounding areas are recommended for groups of friends, families and couples as they have a greatly developed tourist industry and meet the needs of the visitor who seeks a relaxing holiday but also those who want to enjoy the nightlife in the surrounding bar lounges.
The areas of Kavros and Georgioupolis are ideal for excursions to the neighboring villages of Vamos. Each one is particularly interesting either historically or architecturally. From here also a visit to Rethymno and Chania is recommended and you may even end up in South Crete.
Kournas Lake
4 km away from Kavros you will come across the picturesque Kournas with its wonderful natural freshwater lake , the only one that exists in Crete. Located in a cavity formed between hills with lush greenery it is the ideal place for your afternoon nature walk. You can even rent one of the bikes for rent in the area of the lake and cycle along it observing the animals and birds and fish that habitat there.
Lake Kournas and the surrounding area are protected by the Natura 2000. It is a wetland whereby species of fish and birds such as moorhens, eels, water snakes and a rare two-color turtles are to be found there.
If you happen to be in Kavros or Georgioupolis, a visit to Lake Kournas is worthwhile. You can enjoy a walk along its banks, or have a drink or a coffee or eat at one of the local taverns. The scenery is beautiful and rewarding.
